The Problem

  • Entrance to the complex is over 200 yards from parking and the majority of handicap designated parking places.
  • A few handicapped parking spaces that are nearest to an entrance are still 50 yards away.
  • Entering the building presents major physical and safety challenges for many SCC Patrons.
  • A significant percent of the SCC patrons are mobility challenged.

The Solution

  • Adds critically important ADA Access to the south entrance of the Stillwater Community Center complex.
  • Creates an ADA connection between the Dining and Event Hall (home of “Project Heart”) and the main complex.
  • Provides a safer car and bus drop-off area that is completely sheltered from the weather by use of a canopy.
  • Reconfigures parking lot to improve flow and safety.

How We Got There

  • Project concept was designed and updated by the City of Stillwater in 2020.
  • Fund raising kick-off with a $50,000 grant from the Allene Brown Foundation which was then matched by the Stillwater Community Center Foundation.
  • Stillwater City Council approves the project in January 2021
  • By July of 2021 more than 60% of the design had been reviewed and approved by stakeholders, project leadership, and the City of Stillwater.
  • Permits from the City have been approved.
  • The process of selecting contractors is already underway.

What's the Cost?

$360,000 which pays for . . .

  • Ramp & stair system with parking lot modifications
  • Canopy to provide sheltered drop off and entrance to building (Because of the high costs, a canopy will not be included in the current design but the design will make sure a canopy can be added in the future.)
  • Electrical work
  • Engineering and architecture work
  • Contingency fund set for over-run
