Classic Cinema at the Center is provided through a partnership between the Friends of the SCC and the City of Stillwater Community Center. Classic movies will be presented each month and selected by the Friends’ Movie Committee from classics that fit a variety of themes and subjects.
January's movie is the 1972 American Western, "Buck and the Preacher," starring Sydney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, and Ruby Dee.
This film follows a former soldier named Buck as he leads wagon trains of African Americans from Louisiana west to the unsettled territories of Kansas in the late 1860s. Safe passage for passengers requires negotiating with area Native Americans and fighting off paid ruffians. While escaping a trap in his home he comes along a man known as The Preacher who is not who he pretends to be. They work together to get the passengers safely to Kansas.
The First Film Directed by Sydney Poitier!
